Before deploying this project at BPCL Refinery, the company's medical center functioned in a manual mode for most of its operational activities in co-ordination with safety for managing all occupational health related matters. The entire medical history of staff were handwritten by the doctors on individual data cards of each staff and stored them in central a file repository.

Some key issues with this manual approach were: Maintaining of medical records of employees was difficult, maintaining and tracking the time period for periodic medical examinations (mandatory as per the Factory Act) was cumbersome, manual entry of data for all operations of Medical center consumed time and efforts, and the data required by other department from the Medical center could not be provided within a short period. So the employees had to approach the medical centre to get the details of their medical history.

Thus Refinery IS Dept designed and deployed this project so that it would not only overcome the above mentioned limitations but at the same time, the design should be scalable and implementable in any other medical centre across other refineries.
