Wiki, a Hawaiian word for 'fast,' is one of the best online documentation software, which lets you create, delete, or modify text. A well-known deployment of Wiki is Wikipedia. Now, what if you want to deploy such a solution for your organization? DokuWiki, a wiki software, is aimed at an organization's documentation needs and can prove to be very promising. This owes to its ease of deployment (approx 3-4 clicks) and use. Also it doesn't require any database at the backend to manage the data. It runs on any Web server that supports PHP 4.3.3 or higher. With Docuwiki you can keep unlimited versions of a single page. It also allows you to upload images on the page with customized height and width. And it automatically generates the table of content for easy navigation across all the docs.

While installing Dokuwiki make sure you give proper rights on files and folders as it requires to save data and changes to files. Provide a suitable name for your online document repository and fill up the necessary info, i.e. superuser, password, policy and then click on save.

After you have installed Dokuwiki remove the file 'install.php'. This file is required only during the installation process. Initially there are no pages in Dokuwiki, so to create one click on 'Create this page' button. This will be the first page to be displayed to the user visiting Dokuwiki.

Dokuwiki provides text area where you can put your content. It also gives you an easy to use formatting tool to make your content attractive. For adding new page create an internal link on any page and then click on the link which takes you to a new page where it asks to create the page.

For creating namespaces which reside under another namespace, create a page with a colon before the page name. For installing plugins like poll, simply download the same and page it in the plugin folder. To use the plugin on your page refer to the plugin online manual.

Apart from the ACL (Access Control List) you can also authenticate users using LDAP, MySQL user database, and postgreSQL. For using the anti-spam feature of Dokuwiki, go to the admin > configuration page and enable all options in the 'Anti-Spam Setting' section.
