Vesta VMB 102

Thursday, February 08, 2001
Chipset: Intel 810
Price: Rs 4,500
Software: Driver CD; PC-Cillin anti-virus; PC Scan; AWDFlash update for the BIOS
Website: www.ingrammicro.com

This board got good score in its category, and came in fifth overall. It’s a Socket 370 motherboard with Micro ATX form factor. The board has four PCI and one AMR slot and connectors for both ATX and AT power supplies. It only supports FSB of up to 100 MHz.

On the performance front, this one did fairly well in all our tests. In productivity applications, it got 22.5 Winmarks in Business Winstone99, which was the second highest in the category. It also did well in graphics and video application benchmarks. Its sound sub system is also good and it gave an average CPU utilization score of 6.3, which is good. Compared to the rest, it gave an average fps of 17.75 in Quake III, which is good for an entry-level motherboard.

On the flip side the motherboard lost points in features. It’s driver CD didn’t have a main interface from where one could easily install the necessary drivers. Another major problem was that the board doesn’t have built-in ports, so you have to manually look for the ports and plug-in the necessary cables. The motherboard has a USB connector, but we didn’t receive any USB cables with the motherboard for connecting it. In the board’s layout, the hard-disk cable interferes with the RAM slots, making them difficult to reach.

All in all, it’s a good choice given its performance, provided you’re not too concerned about features. It comes with a warranty of one year.
