Internet Telephony is becoming popular as it lets you make ISD and STD calls at a very low cost. And there are numerous VoIP products available that offer low-priced voice communication for your offices as well as home. Here is one such product-a VoIP adaptor from LevelOne that allows you to connect two or more destinations over a public IP.

This device looks like a wireless pocket router, which has two RJ45 sockets for LAN and PC, one RJ11 socket for your phone and one power connector. With this you don't have to buy an additional VoIP phone, thus, saving the cost, as it uses traditional phone to make VoIP calls.

The phone supports ITU-T H.323 VoIP protocol; is compatible with ITU-T G.711, G.723, speech codec and supports ITU-T G.165/168 echo cancellation. The echo cancellation support improves the voice quality by rectifying noise and echo from the voice packets.

Modes
You can set this device in three modes-direct IP dialing, gatekeeper mode and hotline mode. The direct dealing mode lets you make a call directly to the VoIP phone, by keying in IP address of the IP phone that you want to call up. When you register the device in gatekeeper mode, you can make calls to other VoIP users registered to gatekeeper. In this mode, the device IP gets mapped with the alias name and alias phone number.

Then you may directly call the person with the alias name instead of using the IP address. In the hotline mode, you can configure two end points with an alias number and when you pick the phone, it directly dials the alias number for other end and establishes the VoIP connection.

Configuring the device is very easy and one can configure it using just a phone.

We tested the device on a public network (Internet). For this, we used two VoIP adaptors and configured them on different ISP connections, both using public IP. It gave good performance, as the voice was crystal clear and devoid of any background noise or echo.

We also tested the stability of the device, by flooding it with broadcast traffic. But in this case, the device was unable to respond and we could not make any calls. This is because the devices does not have any firewall protection.

Bottom Line: Overall, it's a useful VoIP solution for branch offices; however, it is priced a little on the higher side.
