Saturday, April 05, 2008

GS108T is an ideal solution for SMBs, who are looking forward to deploy a Gigabit Ethernet switch. This compact switch, which can even be wall mounted if required comes with 8 ports having a max speed of 1000 Mbps. It is a perfect solution for connecting servers in your DMZ or places where huge data transfers are required.

This switch is well equipped with features like ACL (Access control List) on based on IP, MAC and ports, and Port prioritization. One also gets an option for creating VLAN's, which helps in maintaining two different isolated networks with the same switch. All these features can be configured using its Web-based management console. On the security front this switch provides you with an option of authenticating users with the help of an external RADIUS server.

Installing this switch on the network was easy; just insert the CD which comes along with and it will run a utility application, with the help of which you can find this device on the network and then provide an IP address to it. For checking the throughput of the switch, we placed the switch on an isolated network and ran QCheck test. While transferring1000 KB payload from one machine to another, this switch gave a TCP throughput of 533 Mbps with a response time of 1ms which is a decent score. The max UDP throughput of the switch was 114 Mbps.
