HMIS was conceptualized to facilitate better planning, monitoring and control of medical and health services at all levels (block, district, division & state) for the administrators and government officials of Gujarat. The Health and Family Welfare Department (HFWD) looks after healthcare facilities and administers public health policies in the state and governs 25 district hospitals and 6 medical college associated hospitals.

HFWD wanted a solution that can handle data of a particular site (Hospital) and provide access to a central data repository as and when required. The HMIS is customized and developed keeping the above objective in mind. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 has been chosen as the data repository at local sites as well as at the central site. Since the data at various sites can grow up to a large extent and get regularly replicated at the central server, Microsoft SQL 2005 is the right choice.

The Web enabled application has been developed in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 to smoothen the activities of all sections of a hospital. The application controls functioning of hospital departments like MIS, ESS, Registration, Wards, Finance, Pharmacy, Blood Bank, OT and Nursing etc. and have 28 modules. The application also uses crystal reports to generate reports for use in various departments in hospitals. The application is a one stop solution for managing hospital activities and resources. Since each hospital is unique in its requirements and priorities, HMIS is an end-to-end solution for the healthcare industry which offers the flexibility of allowing a hospital to choose from various modules as per its specific needs.
