How to Set up

This time we've given a simple, text-based installer that's very easy to use and can dual boot between Desktop and Server versions. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use

PCQLinux 2007 as you probably know by now comes in two editions on the DVD: the Enterprise edition which is meant for installation on servers and the Desktop edition meant for obviously desktop and notebook machines. We have simplified and streamlined the installation process for both these editions significantly so that with the fewest of information asked from you the installation can be underway and you can go get your cup of coffee or lunch. We provide logical defaults to most other information-all of  which can be easily changed once the installation is complete. This is also the method that many other operating systems take.

To install PCQLinux Desktop or Enterprise, pop the dual-layer DVD in a compatible DVD drive. Boot the machine and ensure that it will boot from the DVD drive and not the hard disk. Once the DVD boots up, you will be shown the PCQLinux splash screen. This is where you must decide on the type of installation you want. Do ensure you have taken backups of your entire system first in case you have any important data on it.

  • If you want to install PCQLinux 2007 Desktop on a fresh partition, simply press Enter here.
  • If you wish to upgrade an existing PCQ Linux installation, type 'upgrade' and press Enter. This will upgrade the installation to the PCQLinux 2007 Desktop edition.
  • If you wish to install PCQLinux 2007 Enterprise edition, type 'enterprise' and press Enter.

Wait for the installation to kick off. After performing a few simple checks, the installation will start by prompting you for the partition information. You will need to choose whether to automatically or manually partition and whether you wish to remove 'all' or remove 'all Linux partitions' or create the partitions in empty space on your hard disk. In the case of the Enterprise edition, you will need to make some extra choices about the boot loader location as well. Once past the partitioning and boot loader screens on either edition, you will be asked to enter (and re-enter) a secure password for the 'root' user account. Make sure you create a good, secure password for this as well as remember it as you will need it later on. And believe it or not, that's all you need to do!

The installation of the edition you selected starts off after formatting and transferring the install image to the new partitions takes place. The Enterprise edition takes about one-third time than the Desktop edition due to the smaller number of packages in it.

After the installation is complete, the system will reboot. The Enterprise edition is ready to start working with. However, on the desktop edition there are a few more steps that will need to be completed. On the first boot up after the installation, you will be prompted with the EULA for the Sun JDK. Press space through it till you reach the end and then answer in the affirmative or negative depending on whether you wish to install Java or not. Please note: some of the PCQLinux 2007 desktop utilities do have a requirement for Java, so it is recommended that you select to install it. Once this installation is complete, one final reboot takes place and you can finally login to the newly installed PCQLinux 2007 Desktop Edition.

We do hope you enjoy using PCQLinux 2007. Do give your feedback at forums.pcquest.com.
