A step-by-step guide to installing and making the most out of PCQLinux 2005

Installing PCQLinux 2005 is quite simple in itself. However, new users may get a little overwhelmed with the number of choices and options in this distro.

This article is a guide for getting up and running with this latest incarnation of PCQLinux. Advanced install options are, however, not covered in this.

Phishing and pharming scams 1: When you insert CD 1 of PCQLinux 2005 in your drive and boot your computer with the CD/DVD drive as the first boot drive, you will be presented with this screen. Simply press to continue. 2: After a set of install screens run across quickly, you will be presented with this choice. We highly recommend that you do a media check on all three CDs and only if they all pass, should you proceed. 3: If you have a computer that is fairly modern, you will be taken to the graphical install screens. On older and unsupported hardware, you might see a text install instead. Although this guide uses the GUI screens, the instructions are common for both types. 4, 5: You can use the mouse and keyboard in these screens. You will need to choose the install language and the keyboard configuration from here. Note that you can select from many Indian languages right here. 6: If you have a previous version of PCQLinux (8.0, 2004) installed, the installer will detect it and let you upgrade it or install a fresh copy. 7: When installing a fresh copy, you will be asked to choose from the type of installation you want. 8, 10, 11: Depending on the choice you made, you will be given a more specific type of install in the next screen. Please note that this screen does not exist in Fedora Core 3, so any kick-start scripts will not function with PCQLinux 2005. 12, 13, 14: In the disk partitioning screens, you can choose whether you want PCQLinux 2005 to do the partitioning for you or you want to do it manually. You will, of course, be warned that partitioning can potentially destroy all data on the disk. 15: The GRUB bootloader can be configured (such as adding a security password) on this screen. 16: You can set up your network -to use DHCP or static IP. 17: The default firewall can be enabled or disabled and exceptions can be set up during install time itself. 18: You can install additional Indian languages into the system if you desire so. 19: The time zone is automatically set to IST as Asia/Calcutta for you. 20: The root password is critical. Choose a difficult-to-guess password. But don't forget it, as this is extremely important. 21: This is the package selection screen. The default settings are made for you depending on the specific install type you selected. You can, however, change them to your choice here. 22: You will be reminded to have the required PCQLinux 2005 CDs handy before the installation commences. 23: The install shows you how much it has progressed. The image above periodically displays some useful tips for using your distro so do take a look at them. 24: The install shows you how much it has progressed.

Once the install is complete, the system will reboot and start up with PCQLinux 2005. In case, you have selected to install Java or Adobe reader, the install process will continue in text mode wherein you will need to accept their license agreements and let them complete their respective software installations. Once they are done, the system will automatically reboot again.
