Steller Phoenix DMR

Saturday, April 05, 2008

Here is a low- cost solution from Stellar meant for recovering digital data from removable devices such as memory stick, and flash cards etc. It's mainly targeted at home users and people who are involved with all kind of multimedia files. The advantage of using this product is that it supports almost all the available file formats. Unlike other Steller Phoenix products, this one provides two scan options, the normal scan and the advanced scan. The difference between these two options is that while the former scans sectors, the latter does an advance scan on the drive by scanning each byte of the storage device.

For testing the solution we took a USB drive having corrupted multimedia content and ran normal scan on it. The solution very well recovered are of content onto local hard drive. Then, we formatted one of our SD cards and ran a normal scan. It showed all the deleted images. We copied all these images back onto the card and then formatted the SD card using the Windows format tool and changed the file system from the file system from FAT32 to NTFS. Interestingly this software was not able to recover any of the images both in standard and advance scan after that. Moreover, this solution could only format portable media and can't be used for recovering files from hard drives .
