Sony SDX-520C/R AIT-2

This was the only internal IDE tape drive of the lot, and interestingly, despite that, it came out on tops.

The Sony SDX-520C/R AIT2 is an entry-level drive that uses AIT-2 tape with a native backup capacity of 50 GB and transfer rate of 21GB/hr. This can backup the entire tape in 2:22 hrs, which is quite fast. In fact, the drive achieved and in some cases (backup and restore) even exceeded its rated specs in all the performance tests, except compression, where it only managed 2%.

The initial price of the drive is quite low at just Rs 66,667, but the per GB cost of the media is quite high. Overall, the drive gave far better results than others in its category, which makes it a very good choice for entry-level backup needs. Plus, the drive is also backward compatible with the AIT-1 format.
