If you think that NAS devices are expensive, then check out
the Netgear Storage Central SC101. It's a compact, easy to use and cheap NAS,
costing just 10K. It uses standard parallel ATA drives for the job. The device
is compliant with drives of all sizes and makes, so, at any point if you are out
of space then simply replace the drive with a higher capacity one.

The Netgear Storage Central is easy to configure and
access. Simply plug in two IDE drives and connect it to your network. You can
allot disk quotas that can be used by the user and thereby manage the allocation
of the disk in the storage. But prior to using this device, the client
application has to be installed on each of the Windows machine. Presently,
the device does not support Linux. Along with the Raid 0 and 1 support you can
also use mirroring to secure your data. The mirroring can be done between
two disks within the same central storage or within a network of multiple
storage central devices. It also has adequate privacy parameters to hide private
folders. Two different IP addresses are assigned to the different drives that
can be accessed over the network. We connected two dissimilar drives of 40GB and
70 GB for testing and found that these drives were detected as soon as you
connect to the network. We were able to use multiple data files such as audio
and video at the same time. It comes with a backup software that has a wide
number of options to choose from. You can set the data backup schedule for every
minute, day or month and even customize it for instances such as taking the
backup before you logoff/shutdown or at change of folder.
Bottom Line: The device is a good option for small
offices, given its features and performance.
