Maxtor One Touch III Turbo Edition is the latest in the family of One Touch series of external hard drives. This 1 TB drive is supposed to be for video editors and graphic designers who have to work with large amounts of data. The one we received for review came with FireWire 800,400 (b, a respectively) connectivity and USB 2.0. It supports RAID0 and RAID1 for performance or security according to the need of the user. It has two ATA physical drives inside the box and an external power adapter.

Price: Rs 46,798 (1 yr warranty)
Key Specs: FireWire 400, 800, USB 2.0, 1 TB, 7200-rpm external hard drive with RAID0, RAID1

The drives inside have a spindle speed of 7200 and 16 MB cache buffer. And to the benefit of Mac users, it comes pre-formatted for Mac OS.

The 'OneTouch' button that it is known for, can be used to back up all your data in one go. This button can be configured for options like the default Retrospect back up utility (for taking backup with just one push of the button) or Maxtor-sync (that synchronizes the updated data of the selected folders from the PC to the drive or between multiple PCs, on its own. This is a very useful shortcut for users. We saw a Business Disk Winmark score of 19.8 Mbps and High end Disk Winmark score of 43.2 Mbps. All the scores are impressive compared to the scores of 12.1 and 29.7 respectively scored by the Maxtor One Touch II Small Business Edition that we reviewed in October last year.

The seek time was 12.0 ms as against the rated 9 ms and it could sustain a transfer rate of 37.1 Mbps in USB 2.0 interface.

Bottom Line: This external drive from Maxtor is a good buy for the impressive performance, connectivity options and a huge storage capacity of 1 terabyte that it provides.
