This is a compact network printer for small workgroups with color printing needs. It has both USB and network ports to be used by a single PC on a network. The printer employs ImageREt technology for enhanced color printing and supports a print resolution 600x600 dpi for both color as well as monochrome prints. The printer has a 450 MHz processor that speeds up the printing and comes with 96MB memory. The input tray has a capacity of 150-sheets and can accept pages of upto legal size, but the printer does not support additional trays. For a workgroup, 150 sheets is a low number. Also this printer lacks a duplexer, with which dual side printing can be done automatically. However, it supports manual duplex printing.

To test this printer, we installed it on an isolated network. It took around 26 seconds to print the first page print. It achieved a print speed of 10 pages per minute for monochrome printing and 7 pages for color printing. This is lower as compared to the Canon LBP -5050 (reviewed April '09). The LBP -5050 gave 12 ppm mono and 8ppm color print speeds. The quality of print for both color and mono for HP's laserJet were excellent, with good details and sharpness.

Bottomline: Given the price, print quality and performance, this printer is a good choice for workgroups having color printing requirements.
