Clean-desktop Policy

PCQ

Wednesday, February 06, 2002

Many users have a habit of dumping on their desktop every file they use. Afterwards they often forget to remove these resulting in a cluttered and unusable desktop. Too many icons on a desktop also presents a problem that only a few people are aware of. Windows caches icons that are present on the desktop and this can sometimes slow your system down.

Firstly, Windows annoyingly dumps on the desktop after installation, a few icons like ‘MSN Access’ and ‘Connect to the Internet immediately’ that are of little use. Remove these. Next, install a program called ‘tweakui’, and remove icons like ‘network neighborhood’ and ‘My Documents’, unless you really use them. It’s a tiny utility that can be downloaded from any popular download site such as www.downloads.com. Finally, follow a few simple rules. Instead of saving everything on the desktop, make a few folders there and organize your data within them. Even better, launch Explorer (press the Windows key + ‘E’) and move stuff away from the desktop.
