Don’t you wish that your PC shut off automatically whenever you forget to do so in your evening rush? Windows has a Power Management or Power Option utility in its Control Panel, depending on your Windows version. This lets you choose from various predefined power schemes, depending upon the kind of machine you own. Each scheme differs in the time after which the monitor and the hard disk turns off. You can also change these values to suit your particular needs.

Windows 2000 and XP have additional power saving options, such as hibernate, APM and UPS. Enabling hibernation adds an automatic hibernate option in the Power Schemes tab in Power Options. Here, you can specify the period after which your system will automatically go into hibernation.

In UPS management, you can connect a UPS to your PC through a serial link. It monitors your UPS health, and sounds an alarm or performs other predefined actions when its batteries are about to get exhausted.
